When does crypto open?
It never closes.
The first habit stock traders must drop is waiting for the close. Crypto trades 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, with no circuit breakers. Here is how its clock compares with the stock market.
When does the crypto market open and close?
US stocks trade 9:30am–4:00pm Eastern on weekdays, with pre-market and after-hours sessions around them. Crypto has no central exchange and no bell: OKX matches orders every minute of every day, so an order at 3am is no different from one at noon.
The “open” and “close” on a chart are just the first and last prices of a candle. Bitcoin's daily candle conventionally closes at 00:00 UTC. That's a reporting convention; trading never stops.
| Market | Regular hours | Weekends and holidays |
|---|---|---|
| US stocks | 9:30am–4:00pm ET, Mon–Fri | Closed |
| London Stock Exchange | 8:00am–4:30pm UK time | Closed |
| China A-shares | 9:30–11:30, 13:00–15:00 Beijing time | Closed |
| Crypto · OKX | 24 hours | Open |
China A-shares follow the 2026 exchange holiday calendar; US holidays are not included. OKX never closes. The daily close uses 00:00 UTC, the global convention; you can switch chart time zones in OKX settings.

Does crypto trade on weekends and holidays?
Yes. Saturdays, Sundays, Christmas and every other holiday are trading days in crypto. When China's exchanges close October 1–7, 2026 for National Day, OKX keeps running without a pause.
- Plan before you log off: set stop-loss and take-profit orders before a weekend or a trip.
- Weekend liquidity is thinner: fewer institutions trade, so a single large order can push the price further.
- News lands on weekends too: crypto reacts first; stocks catch up on Monday.
Does crypto have circuit breakers or price limits?
No. The S&P 500 pauses trading after drops of 7% and 13% and halts for the day at 20%, and single stocks have limit-up/limit-down bands. Crypto has none of these. A 10% day in bitcoin is ordinary, and smaller coins can double or halve in a day.
Exchanges do cap how far a limit order can sit from the last price, to prevent fat-finger mistakes, but that isn't a trading halt.
What is a “wick”?
A long shadow on a candle that snaps back within minutes is called a wick. It usually comes from a burst of liquidations or a large market order eating through the book. Without circuit breakers, a wick can hit your stop or liquidation price before anyone blinks.
Settlement and day trading
US stocks settle T+1, and margin accounts under $25,000 have historically run into pattern-day-trader limits. Crypto spot settles instantly: buy and sell again within seconds, as many times as you like.
The trade-off is cost. Many stock apps charge zero commission, while crypto exchanges charge a percentage on every fill. Frequent trading adds up fast, which is why the referral discount matters.

What time does the daily candle close, and how is daily change calculated?
- 00:00 UTC: the most common daily close for bitcoin charts and data sites.
- Local midnight: some charts use your local time zone. OKX lets you switch chart time zones in settings.
- Rolling 24 hours: the change from exactly 24 hours ago, which updates continuously.
Pick one convention and stick with it when you review trades. The weekly candle starts Monday 00:00 UTC.
When is crypto most volatile?
| Time | What happens |
|---|---|
| 8:00pm ET (00:00 UTC, daylight time) | Daily candle close and many settlements |
| 8:30am ET | US CPI, jobs report and other key data |
| 9:30am ET | US stock market open; bitcoin often moves with it |
| 2:00pm ET | Fed rate decision (eight times a year) |
| Weekend nights | Thin liquidity; wicks are more common |
US daylight saving time ends on November 1, 2026, which shifts the UTC-based times by one hour for US readers. See how the Fed moves bitcoin.
